Dhaka is our capital and as an ordinary citizen, I think it deserves better maintained roads. One can hardly find a road in Dhaka which does not have ditches on it and that makes movement of vehicles difficult. Moreover, monsoon rain makes roads worse for both pedestrians as well as motorised vehicles. With delayed rains this season the situation is even worse. Roads like North Badda Bazaar, Malibagh, Mouchak etc. to name but a few are in an utterly dilapidated condition and nobody seems to care for it. Â
We have heard from our superiors and read in books that the surface of the moon is rough and uneven. I sometimes wonder if roads in our city have taken the shape of the moon's surface. Poor condition of roads not only makes vehicle movement difficult but creates perennial traffic gridlock. Pedestrians have to move with extreme care and vehicles are slowed down. Â Bad condition of the roads also reduces the life of the vehicles apart from slowing them down and affecting public life due to undesirable traffic jam. If one looks at Moghbazar road now, he or she will find that it is almost free of any traffic congestion as it has been repaired recently. The situation emphasizes the necessity of regular maintenance of all infrastructures including roads. A regular maintenance work plan should be undertaken by the authorities to keep all our infrastructures in shape. Infrastructures are built to help the people and if they are not maintained regularly or as and when required, they become liabilities for the country and its people.
